Many clients, especially those with terminal illnesses, are bewildered to learn that they are not eligible for Medicare benefits until two years from the date their disability has been determined to have started. Unfortunately, this IS the rule. Although these folks can obtain expedited processing of their applications for disability benefits, it doesn’t affect the waiting period requirement for Medicare coverage.
Currently, there are only two exceptions:
If you suffer from one of the following, you can receive Medicare coverage sooner:
• End-stage renal disease (ESRD) with kidney failure. If you require ongoing dialysis or a kidney transplant, Medicare coverage can begin the third month after the month in which your dialysis began.
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) qualify for Medicare as soon as they are eligible to receive disability benefit payments.
This rule can only be explained as a cost savings measure, as it certainly is not compassionate.
