Return Home of Troops from Afghanistan and Iraq Should Mean Being Prepared to Offer What they Need


A recent article in the New York Times reports that although the withdrawl of troops will save billions of dollars, those returning veterans will need even more in help with their care. Studies show that the peak years for disability compensation comes 30-40 years after a war ends. For example, that peak has not even been reached yet for Vietnam veterans. Although generally there is strong bipartisan support for veterans’ programs, some budget proposals would trim benefits. At the very least, new research into issues like traumatic brain injury and long-term effects will face steep uphill battles.
