WfWI Congo ProgramWfWI Congo Program Run

On International Women’s Day (3.8.14) Swanson, Thomas, Coon & Newton was a proud title sponsor of Team Congo PDX’s 3rd annual group walk/run in support of Women for Women International’s (WfWI) Congo program.  152 participants registered, and all registration fees were a 100% donation to the cause.  In all Team Congo PDX raised $5,124 via registration fees, online donations and raffle tickets for items donated by various community supporters and sponsors. Team Congo PDX raised enough to sponsor 14 women in Women for Women International’s 12 month program.

Participants gathered at Foot Traffic, and ran or walked either a 10K or 5K route along Portland’s Waterfront, and ended with an after-event reception at the offices of STCN where participants were able to interact with various nonprofits, event sponsors and enjoy some water and snacks.  You can read more about the event on Run Oregon’s blog: http://runoregonblog.com/2014/03/14/race-for-congo-women-portland-race-recap/.

WfWI provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. Women who enroll in WfWI’s one-year program learn job skills and receive business training so they can earn a living. They come to understand their rights and how to fight for those rights in their homes, their communities and their nations. They learn how to become leaders.
