Twenty-seven years ago, Ray Thomas and Jim Coon started what has come to be known as the “Lawyer Ride.” Over the decades since, the ride has become an institution in the Portland athletic community and many recreational riders and racers use it for training. The riders meet at the SW corner of Pioneer Square every Monday and Thursday, setting off into Portland’s West Hills at 12:15 on the dot, and the group includes judges, prosecutors, plaintiff and defense lawyers, intellectual property experts, house counsel, techies, bike store owners and mechanics, accountants, hairdressers, and Elvis imitators. Ray has written an article about the history of the Lawyer Ride, the passage of time, and the value of friendly competition—you can read all about it in the February/March 2018 Issue of the Oregon State Bar Bulletin.
