Good news for Disability Claimants in Oregon

Cheryl CoonIt’s rare to be able to share good news.  Our clients are disabled Oregonians, who are unable to work anymore and who often are in danger of losing their homes.  They scrape together enough to live on and to afford their healthcare providers.  They wait two years for a hearing on their disability applications.

But thanks to the Oregon Legislature and Senator Sara Gelser in particular, one roadblock now has been removed, the high cost of their medical records that claimants must supply if they want to be approved for disability benefits.

SB 710, introduced and championed by Senator Gelser, just passed both the Oregon Senate and House.  The bill provides that every disabled Oregonian has a right to their own medical records free of charge when they are appealing a denial by Social Security.

A big thank-you to the Legislature and to Senator Gelser
