Cynthia Newton presents “Rules of the Road When Riding About Town” at Ride Like a Girl Cycling’s Southeast Portland Cityride

Cynthia Newton presented “Rules of the Road When Riding About Town” at Ride Like a Girl Cycling’s Southeast Portland Cityride on July 22.  In her talk, Cynthia focused on the rules that apply to commonly encountered in-town riding situations including bike lanes, residential streets without bike lanes, 4-way intersections and marked and unmarked crosswalks.  Drawing from the Oregon Vehicle Code, the Oregon Driver’s Manual and the Oregon Bicyclist’s Manual, Cynthia explained the rules governing bicyclist collisions with car doors, right-turning vehicles (“right hooks”), trucks and other commercial vehicles. Cynthia represents injured cyclists and families of those killed while cycling and is a frequent speaker on Oregon’s bicycle laws. She often collaborates with Ride Like a Girl Cycling to encourage and promote women’s access to cycling.

Ride Like a Girl Cycling’s core mission is to help women discover the joy of cycling.  RLAG seeks to transform the non-riding woman into a skilled self-sufficient and confident bicyclist who feels capable of riding independently and with her significant other, friends or other cycling groups.  For more information go to www.RideLikeAGirlPortland.com or www.Meetup.com/RLAGcycling.
